Wordpress.org and Joomla CMS

/ Your own registered domain is required for both services ! /

Before I begin explaining differences between Wordpress.org and Joomla, let me introduce the term CMS. CMS acronym stands for Content Management System.

This piece of software does exactly as its name claims and that is managing the content (of a website). Besides this obvious function, CMS also enables everyone, without any knowledge on website construction, to set up a dynamic (based on PHP working with a hosting server and its database) website with advanced functionality.

When it comes specifically to Joomla, it is so called open-source software, meaning its developers let anyone change the fundamental code and functions as it suits them. Once set up, CMS saves up a lot of time, resources and energy while maintaining a website.

Today, when we categorize CMS, we might put the term Blog right next to it. But to be more precise, Blog, as in Internet Online Blog is more of an idea of how to present specific content and get response from visitors via comments. Blog is not a piece of software like CMS, but we might say that the blog is build on CMS and it functions through it.

Wordpress.org is categorized as a Blog software/tool, whereas Joomla belongs to CMS category. By mentioning the paragraph above, I wanted to point out a certain controversy you might have already encountered, that is, some people consider Wordpress.org to be CMS or you might have also seen tutorials called Using Wordpress as CMS. So once again, if we do not want to go too deep into the tech savvy philosophical issues between two opposite fractions, we ought to agree with this idea and proclaim Wordpress to be a CMS.

Just like Joomla, Wordpress is open-source as well, they both have user-friendly interface and they simply enable people without any knowledge of coding or programming whatsoever to construct a dynamic website with advanced functionality.

One difference that stands out is when you are thinking of constructing a really large website. In that case, it is generally recommended to use CMS.(In this case you might also be interested in Drupal software)

All in all, Wordpress probably requires a bit more care and attention in order to create a web according to your idea, whereas Joomla has an enormous template and extension support - third party software, enabling some advanced functionality. On the other hand, Wordpress.org has its codex with every single piece of useful information and all the extensions released for Wordpress are developed by Wordpress, although compared to Joomla extensions, they are in poor numbers.

What to make out of all this?

If you want to quickly set up a bigger website, maybe even E-store and you do not mind spending some money from time to time on the third party extensions to have all the functions you really want easily and fast, choose Joomla.

If you want to take care and work on your website, figure out the whole process, learn and be more aware of what is going on behind the functionality, work harder and spend only time, and you do not plan on really large complex website, choose Wordpress. I would say that with less coding and programming knowledge, you can accomplish more with Joomla rather than with Wordpress, but if you want to invest yourself into the project, I recommend Wordpress. The knowledge to comprehend is not that much and you might get some pretty results very soon.

Hope this article will help you clarify some points ! See you next time.
